As I write this, it is 10:46 PM Iowa City Time, which makes Hattie exactly 6 weeks old. She just got a bath, and is doing well. She's been smiling more and more. But the next second she might frown or look puzzled, or make her "oh!" (pooping) face. So I don't know what she's smiling about. I do like that her many facial expressions seem so genuine. There is very little filter between the impulse and the expression. They just come across her face as she feels them. Smiling might mean an end to that, though, since she gets such a HUGE response when she does it. She'll figure that out pretty quick. I think it's the first step on the road to intentional manipulation of others. We still love her, but she can no longer be completely trusted. She is no longer without guile, one might say. But we'll honor these early, innocent smiles with some pictures.

Our friends Connie and Rob visited us today with their 1 year old, and I couldn't believe that Hattie would ever get to be that big so soon. Yikes!
Brynn and Vicky took Hattie out a few days ago, and got a picture of the diaper change tailgate party:
And one more of Hattie in swaddled bliss:
Babies can't be trusted! Must be that original sin finally peaking through. Just wait until the crazy gut busting laughter, it is then that all hope is lost. My theory is that they are so cute because at the moment a parent is ready to toss the baby out with the trash (usually in the middle of the night in pure darkness and fatigue) a room light is switched on and the sweetness is too overwhelming to do anything but love the little bundle.
